Can Anyone Work in a Restaurant?

Restaurant work isn’t something you can just pick up in a day, it takes skill and dedication. So, who can work in a restaurant?

If everyone worked in a restaurant at least once in their life, more people would learn patience, consideration, teamwork and selflessness. And while it’s too bad that everyone doesn’t work in a restaurant, it’s reassuring to know that anyone could if they wanted to. Really, anyone can work in a restaurant so long as they have a willingness to learn, work hard and play nice with others. That’s why the restaurant industry is one of the best — there is a place for everyone in it and anyone who chooses to work in a restaurant will be better off for it!

Most everyone who works in a restaurant has to work their way up from the bottom, making the industry more inclusive than others. You need certifications like a Food Handlers card or liquor licensing, but you don’t need a fancy education to move up in the industry. Sure, people get culinary degrees or restaurant management degrees and it does give them a leg up on finding jobs, but typically they still have to gain some real life experience in entry to mid-level jobs. Those who don’t go to school can work their way up to those same senior level positions, without a higher education. There are many paths and opportunities to move up in restaurant work, which makes it a great career choice for all backgrounds.

In a restaurant you’ll meet introverts, extroverts, night owls, morning birds — literally all kinds of people work in restaurants.

Because the restaurant industry is big and there are many different types of establishments, there’s a job for every personality type. In a restaurant you’ll meet introverts, extroverts, night owls, morning birds — literally all kinds of people work in restaurants. You can even be a complete asshole and work in a restaurant. The diversity found in restaurant work makes it a great place to learn how to interact with different personalities and learn which jobs best fit your own.

Restaurant work is great for all types of lifestyles as well. The flexible and odd schedules can work well for those who have families, work a second job, or are in school. Most restaurants will work with you on your schedule so you can find something that allows you to do other things — or, you know, just have a life. Another bonus about working in a restaurant is that restaurants are everywhere, so if you’ve got a dream to travel or live in another city, you can find a job most places pretty easily.

So no matter who you are, where you are in life, or what you’re like — the restaurant industry is open to all. While it’s not easy work and you do need a killer level of work ethic, literally anyone can work in a restaurant — and they should!
