In 2020, Millennials and Generation Z will comprise nearly 40% of all American Voters. This is our chance to make our voices heard and get the results we need in our communities and as a nation. The current obstacles we are facing this election have re-energized voters to re-educate themselves about our political processes. The blatant removal of polling sites, residency requirements, and the rise of Voter ID laws are efforts to keep voters away from the ballot booths, but Rock The Vote advocates for legislation that protects and expands voter rights instead of suppressing it.
This year’s election is essential to our nation’s well-being and Rock The Vote is a nonpartisan nonprofit which is dedicated to creating a culture of civic engagement by activating, educating, and supporting young people to participate. On November 3, 2020, voters will elect the U.S. President, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 34 of the 100 Senators, 13 governors, and many state and local elected officials. Voting is the most powerful tool we have in our democracy to determine the values and direction of our country and our communities.
This year has proved challenging for folks in the industry who are struggling to compensate for income lost because of the pandemic, whether by tips or restaurant revenue. We are all looking for effective leadership to get us out of the weeds. The Independent Restaurant Coalition, formed by prominent Chefs nationwide, has been a huge resource to save small businesses affected by COVID-19. They’ve also been urging Congress to pass the RESTAURANTS Act, which includes a $120B Revitalization Fund for Independent Restaurants and plans to reduce U.S. unemployment by 2.4% — ensuring that 85% of small businesses don’t permanently close their doors. And not to mention we are all continuing to fight racial injustices, police brutality and the preservation of our constitutional rights on a daily basis, but fixing these inequities requires policy reform. That can only happen through voting. So I will say it louder, for the folks in the back, this election is crucial!
Due to the uncertainties caused by COVID-19, more states are considering flexible voting options such as Mail-in voting. Just remember that voters should be registered as early as possible to get ballots sent back in time for deadlines or drop off at your nearest poll site!
