Resume Tip: Keep to a Simple Format

Your resume is the first step to landing that next great job — take it from us. Here are our tips to help make your resume really stand out.

It can be tempting to use the coolest resume template from Google Docs or Word when putting together a resume. In truth, this can distract the employer from the important aspects of your resume and actually do more harm than good. Keeping your resume format simple is the best way to ensure your skills and work experience stand out.

You can find a lot of fancy resume templates online, complete with all the bells and whistles. But think carefully about using one for your resume. Many of these templates have large borders and use varying fonts that can be frustrating when formatting your resume into their structure and take up a lot more time than necessary. These templates also add a lot of extra noise that can be displeasing to hiring managers and don’t add much to your skillset. If you decide to use a template, try to go for a more basic one available or create your own in a plain document.

One of the easiest ways to create a simple formatted resume is by building and using your Poached Profile. In your account, you can open your Profile from the side navigation menu. There, you can upload a summary, work history, education, and any certifications you might have. When you use your Poached Profile to apply for a job, we format your information in an easy-to-read, simple resume. So your most essential skills don’t get overpowered by the formatting features of a resume template you found on Google Docs.
