One way to ensure your voice stays positive is to use optimistic and inclusive language when listing out traits or qualifications you are hoping for in an applicant. For example, “ServSafe certification is a plus!” Or “Ideal candidate has 2+ years experience, but we’re open to training the right person.” Rather than saying “Only ServSafe candidates need to apply” or “Must have 3+ years of experience.” While this type of language intends to weed out the unqualified applications, the reality is that you’re likely pushing away someone great. Try to be encouraging, but in a way that still allows you to describe what’s needed to perform the job.
